    Duration: 12 months (commencing in January)

    The Fellowship would be constructed around the three major hospitals in Geelong, i.e. the Geelong Hospital, Geelong Private Hospital and St. John of God Hospital.

    About the Fellowship
    It is envisaged that the Fellowship will be a clinically-based fellowship with a linked research component. The clinical component will be supported by the active orthopaedic surgeons in Geelong and co-ordinated by Mr. Richard Page, FRACS (Orth), FAOrthA.   • Dr Michael Neil Hip and Knee Fellowship (Sydney, New South Wales)

    Duration: 12 months

    Hospital:
    St. Vincent’s Clinic, St. Vincent’s Private Hospital and Orthopaedic Research Laboratories, Prince of Wales Hospital University of New South Wales.

    About the Fellowship
    The Fellowship provides a 12-month in-depth exposure to all aspects of adult hip and knee reconstruction, with particular emphasis on primary and revision total joint arthroplasty. Of the 400 joint replacement procedures performed by the Supervisor, there would be a significant exposure to PFC total knee arthroplasty, S-ROM total hip arthroplasty both primary and revisions, as well as minimally invasive Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. The unit attracts frequent complex revision procedures requiring structural allograft and other advanced reconstructive techniques.

    All Fellows need to be eligible for registration of the New South Wales Medical Board. Medical indemnity for surgical assistance is provided.

  • Dr Beischer and Dr Blackney Foot and Ankle Fellowship (Melbourne, Victoria)

    About the Fellowship
    This foot and ankle fellowship will be predominantly clinical and in theatre with a small research component. Mr. Andrew Beischer and Mr. Mark Blackney will support this fellowship. The Fellowship would be based on a mixture of public and private orthopaedics, to provide a spectrum of clinical and surgical experience. The key clinical and surgical opportunities that Fellows can participate in within the programme are Foot and Ankle and orthopaedic trauma. The fellow will be predominantly based at the Royal Melbourne Hospital but will also be working across various other hospitals.

  • Sportsmed SA Fellowship (Adelaide, South Australia)

    Duration: 12 months (two 6 month rotations)

    SPORTSMED·SA is a Sports Medicine Clinic located 4 kilometres from the Adelaide city centre.

    About the Fellowship
    The successful candidates duties will incorporate both clinical and assisting with joint replacement surgery, revision surgery and sports medicine surgery. There will be an expectation to achieve at least two publications in peer review journals in each 6 month period of the fellowship. The fellow will be required to present at appropriate meetings as directed by the supervisors.

    The tenure will involve working two six months periods with each set of supervising surgeons, Dr Greg Keene/Dr Roger Oakeshott and Dr David Martin and/Dr Richard Crowley. The Fellow’s duties and responsibilities will be firstly a clinical responsibility for patient assessment (under supervision) both pre and post operative. This includes meticulous record keeping and medical reports at the same high standard as the supervisors.

    About the Fellowship
    The UWO Shoulder Fellowship will provide the surgeon with an intensive one-year clinical and research experience designed to focus on all aspects of shoulder pathology. The candidate will benefit from the combined practices of two major clinical teaching units currently training both residents and fellows, and from exposure to a wide range of shoulder problems and their surgical solutions.

    Candidates will spend 4.5 months at each site assisting in the care of patients in the clinic, operating room and inpatient ward. Three months of protected research time will be allocated with a project of publishable quality expected at the completion of the fellowship. Decisions regarding research topic will be made at the beginning of the year using the resources of the participating labs.

    Fellows will be expected to participate in a variety of related academic activities, such as medical student and resident teaching, preparation of rounds/conferences and manuscript review preparation etc.

    All aspects of the job are under the guidance of Mr. Beverland, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. Mr. Beverland is lead consultant for primary hip and knee replacement and is in charge of the Outcomes Assessment Unit. As well as the fellows this team includes nursing and secretarial staff. The post has both outpatient and inpatient components.

    About the Fellowship
    Mr. Khalid Drabu, FRCS, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, is the Director of the Joint replacement Unit at East Surrey Hospital and since his appointment in 1989 has carried out over 2700 total joint replacements. The fellows will get at least one half day a week hands on operating with their own dedicated list. Depending on the fellow it is probable that the all day Wednesday elective list will have cases for the fellow to operate upon. The fellow will have their own list on a Thursday afternoon. They may also be asked to undertake additional lists. They are also actively involved with elective lists on a Wednesday. It is up to the fellows if they want to carry out trauma, as these lists are also available but by no means mandatory.

    The fellowship covers both public and private hospitals. The fellow will predominantly work for Dr Winson whose practice is exclusively foot and ankle but does cover general orthopaedic trauma. The fellow may be required to assist other surgeons who cover foot and ankle and some knees. The fellow is fortunate to see both the public cases and get an insight into the private sector

    About the Fellowship
    to achieve publications in peer review journals and presentations at appropriate meetings. At least two arthroplasty teaching conferences are held each week, plus weekly Grand Rounds featuring nationally known speakers. The goal of this arthroplasty research fellowship program is to deepen the knowledge and advance the skills of total Joint arthroplasty. Several prior fellows have gone on to distinguish themselves and achieve leadership positions at other leading academic institutions. The fellow will have a Harvard Appointment as a Research Fellow.

    Fellows have the opportunity to see outpatients with attending surgeons in their clinics, but are not responsible for direct patient care. At least two arthroplasty teaching conferences are held each week, plus weekly Grand Rounds featuring nationally known speakers.
