Congratulations to Alex B Boyle, a SET 2 Orthopaedic Trainee on the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association (NZOA) training programme, who has been awarded the prestigious Clarendon Scholarship to undertake his DPhil (PhD) at the University of Oxford.
The Clarendon Scholarship is one of the most competitive and highly regarded graduate Scholarships in the world. It is awarded to “the most academically outstanding students admitted to Oxford” providing full funding for tuition and living expenses.
He will complete his PhD in Clinical Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, with a focus on improving the evidence base for orthopaedic surgery.
Alex studied medicine at the University of Auckland on a University of Auckland Scholarship receiving multiple academic awards including the Department of Medicine Prize for highest overall grade in medicine for MBChB IV. He completed a Master of Public Health Degree at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, then worked as a strategy consultant at the Boston Consulting Group, focusing on health care and private equity. Alex has also consulted on the business strategy for the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the Pacific region.
Since returning to New Zealand he was selected onto the NZOA Surgical Training Programme. He is passionate about evidence-based surgery and how the public and private sectors interact in the provision of orthopaedic care.
We congratulate Alex on this remarkable accomplishment and look forward to seeing the significant contributions he will make to orthopaedic research and clinical practice, both in New Zealand and internationally.
