ANZHFR held it’s eight New Zealand Hip Fest conference on 17th & 18th September in Auckland this year, having its first two day event with 120 attendees.
Day 1 showcased the three local hospitals (Auckland City, North Shore & Middlemore) teams presenting complex case studies on frailty and surgery optimisation, legal aspects of care and resource constraints for our fractured hip patients.
The 2026 Golden Hip Awards ended the day with much fun and adds friendly competition amongst the hospital teams. (See article below for finalists and winners).
Day 2 started with a consumer video, which gave the day perspective of why we were all there, with focus on the patient hip fracture journey, presentations began with a paramedic from St John, joining Hip Fest for the first time, through to speakers from anaesthetics, orthopaedic surgery, physiotherapy rehab and osteoporosis treatment. Three hospitals presented projects in pain, opioid use and osteoporosis treatment using HFR data, Sarah Hurring, Geriatrician and NZ HFR lead reports, “It is fabulous to see hospitals using their own HFR data to improve care standards for this cohort of patients.”
We are always grateful to the presenters for giving up their time and sharing their extensive knowledge with us and thanks to Maree Todd, NZGMS President for presenting the Golden Hip awards. Nicola Ward, NZ HFR Coordinator reports, “ the two day event has been a great success with most hospital teams attending from around the country, Hip Fest highlights all the great hip fracture care that is happening around New Zealand and allows teams to network and learn from each other, alongside a day of expert learning and education.”
Following feedback, we will continue to provide this free 2 day event and hope to see everyone again at Hip Fest 2027- SAVE THE DATE- Mon 13th and Tues 14th Sept in Christchurch.
