The 2024 Hui-ā-Tau & Scientific Conference held in Rotorua September 26–29
was a major success for Te ORA -The Māori Medical Practitioners Association
The theme was Kia mate ururoa, kei mate wheke - May we be guided by courage, not fear and John Mutu-Grigg (wearing his NRK, NZOA & RACS hats) represented orthopaedics in a saw bones session to promote surgery and orthopaedics amongst all the other colleges & delegates present
Across four days, 180+ attendees took part in a dynamic programme including Te Rā Tūhura Medical Careers Expo, wānanga, keynote addresses & scientific presentations
The atmosphere was one of deep connection and pride -a celebration of the achievements of Māori doctors, and the growing influence of Māori-led excellence within the health sector
There was a strong appreciation for the inclusion of wānanga and workforce development discussions, and a reaffirmed commitment to the kaupapa of mana motuhake (self determination) in Māori health
The Awards Dinner at Te Puia was a particular highlight, providing an opportunity to acknowledge outstanding contributions and to celebrate together in a culturally rich and uplifting setting
For the second year in a row NRK/NZOA were awarded the best college award by the junior doctors
