SET Programme in Orthopaedic Surgery for the 2014 training year
Please note that all applicants must pre-register with RACS, even if they have applied previously.
Information for Applicants
The Surgical Education and Training Programme (SET) in Orthopaedic Surgery is administered by the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association (NZOA) and delivered by its Education Committee on behalf of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).
The Programme covers training in all aspects of Orthopaedic Surgery and involves rotating through accredited training posts in various hospitals.
The Education Committee will direct trainees to specific training posts. However, trainees do still need to apply to the relevant hospital for appointment.
The minimum period of training is five years from SET 1 to SET 5. Inadequacies in training or other circumstances (e.g. a period of illness) may require the trainee to complete a further period of training.
Appointment is not for the entire training period, trainees are appointed on a yearly basis.
Only those applicants who meet the required criteria will be considered for appointment to SET in Orthopaedic Surgery. In 2012 a total of nine candidates were offered training posts.
The Education Committee of the NZOA and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons regards competency based, in-training assessment as an essential component of the training process. Progress is reviewed regularly through assessment.
Applicants must have NZ Residency or be a New Zealand citizen, and be registered through the Medical Council of NZ to apply to SET. Follow the following links for more information:-
